Pro Bono Partnership Project

Information for Students

General Information

The Pro Bono Partnership Project is a new, volunteer-based program run by the University of Wisconsin Law School. The Project will connect second and third-year law student participants with Dane County non-profit organizations and attorneys involved in civil pro bono work. The Project will seek to match students with cases consistent with their areas of interest and availability. All work in the project is voluntary. Attorneys would receive no fee from their clients and students would receive neither pay nor credit for their work.

Cases may be either referrals from local legal service organizations or existing pro bono matters for which a participating attorney seeks student assistance.

Students will assist their partner organizations or attorneys up to ten hours per week and may participate for one or two semesters. Once a student is partnered with a participating lawyer on a project case the student can arrange his or her schedule and work location with the supervising attorney.

The participating lawyer is the attorney of record in the case and will be responsible for supervising the student and reviewing their work.

Reasons to Participate

There are several reasons for students to participate in the Pro Bono Partnership Project, including::

  • gain hands-on experience with civil litigation in a firm or non-profit setting,
  • network with area attorneys in varied practice areas,
  • develop the skills necessary to be an effective practitioner,
  • incorporate pro bono work into your legal career as required by attorney ethics codes, and
  • help persons in need.

How to Apply

Interested students should complete and submit an application (PDF), a resume and personal statement of interest to Kristin Davis in the Career Services Office. Students will be notified when an appropriate case is referred.
