The Public Defender Internship Project is now taking applications from 2Ls. The project offers students a ten week PAID summer internship in State Public Defender Offices around Wisconsin. Under Supreme Court Student Practice Rule, interns represent clients and appear in court under the supervision of a staff attorney. As part of the program, students take a spring class in the defense function, a trial advocacy seminar, and a fall professional responsibility class. This project gives students an opportunity to experience the very real practice of law outside the confines of the law school. It is also a chance to make important contacts in the legal community. These will serve you well, regardless of whether you want to practice criminal law or not, and whether you want to practice law in Wisconsin or not. Graduates of the program have gone on to careers all over the country in big firms, small firm or solo practice, inhouse corporate work, stat and federal government agencies, teaching, and of course, as defense attorneys and prosecutors. Applications are available in Career Services or from Diane Collins in the Remington Center. If you have questions, please contact Clinical Professor Michele LaVigne at mlavigne@wisc.edu.
