An externship opportunity in health law is available for Fall, 2006. This externship will only be open to those students enrolled in the Health Law and Administration: Advocacy for Health Access and Quality (Law 935) The externship is available up to (10) students for three (3) clinical credits-9 hours per week. The students' work at the externships will be graded as either satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Externship Sites Sites for externship placements include government agencies, public interest law groups, health care institutions, and law firms. Example of sites include: Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services University of Wisconsin Hospital Wisconsin Citizen Action Disability Benefits Project Value of the Externship Offering The externship offering will allow students who are enrolled in the health law course to engage in a useful health law experience involving working with a practitioner in the field and observing the practice of law in action. These "real world" experiences will enhance the students' classroom experience. In addition, the externships provide an opportunity for a pro bono contribution to the provision of health law services in a public interest or public service setting. Finally, the externship placements will provide students with an outlet in which they can demonstrate their skills and talents. This work could potentially generate future career opportunities. In addition to providing opportunities for law students, the externship offering has added benefits for the Law School, the University, the community and the State. Connections will be formed between the Law School and lawyers in the community who have an interest in and appreciate the opportunity to interact with the Law School. The externships will also reflect the University's commitment to providing services to the community. Finally, the externships will help to provide much needed services to disadvantaged groups in the community and in the State.
