UW Law School professor and bioethicist Alta Charo was in Washington on March 9, 2009, for President Obama’s official lifting of restrictions on taxpayer-funded research using human embryonic stem cells.

Charo was a member of the small team of people who helped to prepare the executive order, the press materials, and the President's remarks, in conjunction with her work as a member of Obama’s transition team and her continued work as an informal adviser.

Charo was honored to receive one of the pens used by President Obama in signing the executive order.

An article in Madison's Capital Times includes comments by Charo and other UW-Madison professors who attended the signing.
