3Ls tossing canes over uprights at endzone

Third-year law students are invited to join in our Cane Toss tradition during UW Homecoming festivities. Festivities will include a dinner on Friday, Oct. 6 for third year student and their guests at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art followed by a tailgate in the Law School atrium on Saturday, Oct. 7 prior to the Cane Toss at Camp Randall Stadium. During the Cane Toss, Dean Dan Tokaji will lead third-year students to the north end zone of the Camp Randall stadium. Before kickoff, students will run across the field and toss their canes over the goalposts. As the custom goes, students who catch their canes will win their first case. If they drop the cane, they will lose their case. Read more about the history of the cane toss tradition.

Family members are also welcome to attend but must have a ticket to enter the stadium. Contact Kimberly Raether for information on registering for the cane toss events.

Game Day Logistical Information

Important information for 3Ls participating in the Cane Toss follows. Please read carefully.

  1. Only graduating law students will be allowed on the field to participate in the Cane Toss. NO friends or family members are allowed on the field. Additionally, children under the age of 18 are not allowed on the field at any time during Badger football games. Students who disobey this rule will be removed from the stadium and will not be allowed back in.
  2. Those who purchased game tickets through the Law School's Eventbrite registration will receive their tickets electronically. Students should plan on transferring guests' game tickets to their guests prior to the Cane Toss, as family members and guests will be entering through a different gate than students. Please review the digital ticket delivery and support services webpage for more information.
  3. Hats, canes, and tailgate wristbands will be available for pick-up in the 2nd Floor kitchen (across from the locker area) during the Homecoming tailgate starting at 8:30 a.m. Hats and canes are free and are meant to be kept as momentos. Students who wish to pick up their hat and cane early should make arrangements with SBA representatives.
  4. The tailgate will be held prior to the Cane Toss in the atrium starting at 8:30 a.m.
  5. Students using their own student tickets must leave earlier than the rest of the group and enter through the student gate (Gate5), and make their way over to Section L inside Gate 3 to meet the rest of the Cane Toss group.
  6. Students who are using their own game tickets located in the general admissions location (not purchased through the law school) should plan on walking with and entering the stadium with the larger group at Gate 3.
  7. Dean Tokaji will lead all law students from the Law School to Camp Randall for the Cane Toss at 10 a.m. sharp in order to make it to the stadium and into Section L by the north end zone before the band arrives.
  8. Students not attending the tailgate should meet at the Law School to walk to the stadium with the rest of the group. Special accommodations have been made for our group to enter through Gate 3. Those preferring not to walk with the group must make it to Gate 3 and into Section L by the north end zone on their own to run with the rest of the group. As a reminder, the Cane Toss happens prior to kickoff.
  9. UW Law School and the University of Wisconsin are not responsible for any items lost or stolen during the Cane Toss.
  10. Guests should plan on leaving early and not walking with the student group.
  11. Guests wanting to observe the Cane Toss may do so from the bottom of Section A. Guests should be in this area by 10:15 a.m. in order to see the Cane Toss.

Carry-in policy and covid-19 Protocols

Participants should review Camp Randall’s carry-in policy prior to the Cane Toss. It is recommended that students not carry any valuables onto the field that may be lost during their run across the field.
