It’s time for Homecoming Cane Toss, scheduled for Oct. 25, just prior to the Badgers football game against the University of Maryland.

Each year before the homecoming game, third-year UW Law students charge down the football field toward the south end zone, where they throw a cane over the goal post. Legend holds that those catching their canes will win their first case.

It isn’t exactly clear when the tradition got its start — research suggests a law professor may have brought it from Ohio to Wisconsin nearly a century ago — but its place in the hearts of alumni is undeniable. Graduates often call their Cane Toss experience a favorite memory from their UW Law School years.

This year's festivities begin with a tailgate party at the Law Building, after which Dean Margaret Raymond will lead students to Camp Randall Stadium.

To view the annual spectacle, Badgers football fans should take their seats by 10:15 a.m. Kickoff for Saturday’s homecoming matchup is slated for 11 a.m.

Watch an NCAA video about the tradition.
