The East Asian Legal Studies Center's Senior Director Emeritus, Professor Charles Irish gave the keynote speech at the Symposium on Improving Competitiveness of Taiwan's Financial Sector on October 17th, 2014, in Taipei.  The symposium was hosted by the Taiwan Stock Exchange, the Taiwan Supervisor Commission, and Taiwan's Financial Services Roundtable.  As part of the Symposium, Irish also participated in a panel discussion on Comparative Taxation of Financial Services.

The text of his speech can be found here.  The paper describes the critical role that China now plays in Taiwan's international economic relations, why China's dominant role is unlikely to change, and what Taiwan can do to avoid economic isolation and maintain a globally integrated and competitive economy.
