Medal from Judge Burgenthal

Professor Richard Bilder has received the 2016 Manley O. Hudson Medal from the American Society of International Law. The award recognizes scholarship and achievement in international law.

Bilder is professor emeritus at University of Wisconsin Law School. Awards committee members praised his contributions to the study of international dispute settlement, his pioneering work on the intersection of environmental protections and the international legal process, and his long record of service to ASIL.

“Professor Bilder approaches people and projects with intellectual acuity, dignity and compassion. In doing so, his work and his presence have inspired many generations of international lawyers to serve the greater good,” the committee wrote.

Judge Thomas Burgenthal, who served on the International Court of Justice at The Hague, presented the award to Bilder at ASIL’s annual meeting in March.
