Funding for Foreign Language Study!

The competition for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships and awards at UW-Madison will open very soon.

In anticipation, we encourage you to read through the following information and to attend one of the information sessions listed below.

The upcoming competition is for Summer 2015 and Academic Year 2015-2016 fellowships.

FLAS fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the UW's National Resource Centers to assist students in acquiring foreign language and either area or international studies competencies.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

Applications by students in professional fields are encouraged. Preference will be given to applicants with a high level of academic ability and with previous language training.

The application deadline is February 13, 2015.

Please note that you can not apply for a FLAS to study Spanish, Chinese, Japanese or Korean.

Only graduate students in professional schools can apply for a FLAS to study French or German.

Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least one year of language instruction in the target language prior to the start of the FLAS award.

There will be two information session for students interested in applying for a FLAS award (please note different times for graduate & undergraduate applicants).

The content of the December and January meetings will be identical; students need only attend one session:

Thursday, December 11th, 2014 (in 206 Ingraham Hall):

2:00 - 3:00pm for undergraduate student applicants
3:30 - 4:30pm for graduate applicants*

Thursday, January 22nd, 2015 (in 206 Ingraham Hall):

2:00 - 3:00pm for undergraduate student applicants
3:30 - 4:30pm for graduate applicants*
*Graduating seniors who plan to be in graduate or professional school at UW next year should attend the session for graduate applicants.
