Due to the president’s visit the Law School building will be closed all day Thursday, October 4 until 6 p.m. (or until clearance is granted).

Students should await details from their instructors on alternative arrangements. Employees will receive additional information from supervisors about work arrangements.

“It’s rare that a sitting president visits campus,” says Dean Margaret Raymond. “This is an excellent chance for our students to see the political process up close, to view history on our doorstep — less than 100 feet from our door, in fact.”

Between the hours of 7 a.m. to approximately 6 p.m., the Law School will be closed to classes, employees, and all other activities. Other buildings on Bascom Hill will also close: Science Hall, Education, North Hall, South Hall, and Music Hall.
Regular Law School functions, such as library access and staffing, should resume by 6:30 p.m.

Dean Raymond stresses that the Law School would welcome a visit from any major political candidate. “Hearing a candidate for an important political office is a wonderful opportunity for our students to appreciate our democracy and their role in it. They might even begin to contemplate running for office themselves.”

For UW law students, this vision of the future could very well come true. Notes Dean Raymond, “Our next senator from the state of Wisconsin will be a UW Law School graduate, since both candidates, Tommy Thompson '66 and Tammy Baldwin '89, are alumni.”
