The Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Project (WAPP), a new complement to the UW Law School’s Resource Center on Impaired Driving, has been created to provide community leaders and law enforcement officers with Wisconsin-specific evidence-based tools and technical assistance on policies and practices that prevent and reduce alcohol misuse.
Because information drawn from the experience of other states or created for a nationwide audience is often difficult to adopt or implement in Wisconsin, the new project was created to provide policies and practices framed specifically for Wisconsin and the political landscape of local government.
Coordinator of the new project is Julia Sherman, who has worked on alcohol-related policy issues since 2001, first at the American Medical Association's Reducing Underage Drinking through Coalitions project and later as national field director for the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at Georgetown University. Most recently she worked at the Wisconsin Clearinghouse for Prevention Resources, where she provided technical assistance to communities and coalitions on preventing and reducing underage drinking.
Before beginning her alcohol policy work, Sherman worked for the Wisconsin Legislature, where she served as Director of the Assembly Democratic Caucus Staff, Deputy Director of the Senate Democratic Caucus Staff, and an aide to members of both the Senate and Assembly.
