The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) has selected Samantha Leonard '12 as a 2011 Haywood Burns Fellow.

Leonard, a second year student at the UW Law School, will work over the summer providing free legal representation in family law and restraining order cases for clients of Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) located in Madison. DAIS’ mission is to empower those affected by domestic violence and advocate for social change through support, education, and outreach.

Fellowships place students with public interest organizations that are working to protect and further the civil and criminal rights of oppressed people in the United States. They honor the memory of Haywood Burns, a lawyer, law professor and past NLG president who inspired generations of lawyers to work with under-served communities and those organizing for social justice.
