Clinical Assistant Professor Mitch, with UW Law School alumni Robert Andersen ’69, David Sparer ’79, Brenda Konkel ’93 and Tony Gibart ’09, presented testimony on February 15, 2012, regarding proposed changes to rental housing law that would alter the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants throughout Wisconsin. The two bills up for consideration, SB466 and AB561, were introduced this week and scheduled for public hearings with only two days of notice. The group worked quickly to present expert testimony before the State Senate Committee on Housing and Insurance as well as the State Assembly Committee on Housing and offered to participate in a workgroup or legislative council study.
“Working together, our alumni were able to educate the legislature about serious unintended consequences lurking within these bills. As drafted, the bills contained numerous negative implications for landlords, tenants, and third parties,” said Mitch. “At the end of the day, law makers on both sides of the aisle agreed that our testimony exposed significant issues that needed to be addressed before the bills could proceed.”
