Professor R. Alta Charo has been elected to the governing council of the National Academies' Institute of Medicine.

IOM is an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice on health and health care to decision makers and the public. The council is responsible for approving studies undertaken by the IOM, overseeing its budget and investments, and guiding policy related to programs, relationships and membership.

Charo is the Warren P. Knowles Professor of Law and Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is on the faculty of the Law School and the Department of Medical History & Bioethics at the School of Medicine and Public Health.

Charo was one of three newly elected council members. She begins her three-year term on Jan. 1, 2014.
