Foundation, Scholarship Honor Life of UW Alum Joseph P. Mettner JD '92

The Joseph P. Mettner Foundation has announced its first annual Joseph P. Mettner Scholarship, a $10,000 award open to students at the University of Wisconsin Law School who are pursuing a career in public service.

Joseph P. Mettner received his bachelor’s degree in 1986 and his JD in 1992 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He had a passion for public policy and was devoted to public service, in many ways embodying the UW Law in Action tradition.

Mettner began working for Governor Tommy Thompson while still in law school and, in 1993, Governor Thompson appointed him to serve as a Commissioner on the Tax Appeals Commission. He served in that role until 1996, when he was appointed as one of three members—and later as chairman—of the state's Public Service Commission.

In 2003, he left the Commission to form his own utility-regulation consulting firm, Found Lake Consulting. He donated a great amount of time to helping others, both personally and professionally, before passing away unexpectedly in 2009.

The Joseph P. Mettner Foundation was created to honor his life by providing scholarships to law students planning careers in public service.

About the Scholarship

The scholarship will be awarded to a UW Law student who plans to pursue a life of public service as he or she enters the workforce. Public service includes, but is not limited to, careers in government service, public policy advocacy or non-profit representation.

Deadline for application is May 30, 2011.
