Individualized Writing Instruction Service

Program Description

The Law School's Individualized Writing Instruction Service (IWIS) provides help with writing to any law student, at any ability level.  IWIS offers writing instruction tailored to each student's learning style and focused on each student's particular writing concerns.

Services Available:

  • Individual Conferences - address your questions and concerns about writing, large or small, in a confidential setting; and

  • Group Workshops - learn more about topics of interest, such as improving writing samples or reorganizing for greater persuasion, in workshops for students scheduled throughout the year.

Current Topics

For 1Ls

During the exam period, appointment times will still be available several days a week for advice on papers, writing for work, writing samples, and other writing projects. Check the door to room 2378 for a schedule of available days and times, or email mbray@wisc.edu.

UPCOMING WORKSHOP:

Writing Persuasive Fact Statements and Issues

This workshop shows you how to adapt and bend the rules about clear sentence structure and paragraph organization to create Statements of Fact that emphasize key points. It also shows how to use phrase structures and word choice to make your Issues more persuasive. The workshop includes examples of the techniques, and provides opportunities for you to explore how the techniques would work in your assignment.

           Tuesday, 4/19, 12:30 to 1:10 in room 2225

           Tuesday, 4/19, 2:25 to 3:05 in room 2225

           Friday, 4/22, 12:30 to 1:10 in room 3247

Also check out the rest of the upcoming workshops.

For 2Ls and 3Ls

If your writing sample isn't working for you, you may want some advice about ways to upgrade it. Or you may want help writing quick but unique thank you letters. Or you may want to work on correcting writing in the light of feedback you may have received from you teachers, employers, or career services advisers. Finally, you might want an individual session to help you get organized for a course paper or law review article.
