Lecture Series on "Laws Response to Violent Conflict"

GLS launched the Speaker Series on "Laws Response to Violent Conflict" in fall 2011 as a way of synthesizing its previous work on "After the Violence."

Fall 2011

  • September 20, 2011: Lecture  on "Libya and the Arab Revolution" by Professor Thilo Marauhn (Giessen University, Germany), part of the speaker series on "Laws Response to Consequences of Violent Conflict, sponsored by the Global Legal Studies Center, 12:00-1:15, Lubar Commons (7200 Law)

  • October 14, 2011: Lecture on "Everyday Law in a Socialist State" by Professor Inga Markovits, University of Texas, sponsored by the Center for German and European Studies and GLS, part of the speaker series on "Laws Response to Consequences of Violent Conflict," noon-1:15pm Lubar Commons (7200 Law)
  • December 1, 2011: Lecture on "Some Thoughts on the Link Between Sexual Violence During Armed Conflict in Africa and the African Union's Right to Humanitarian Intervention" by Ntombizozuko "Zozo" Dyani, senior lecturer of law, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, part of the speaker series on "Laws Response to Consequences of Violent Conflict," sponsored by GLS, African Studies, The Center for Research on Gender and Women and the Department of Gender and Women's Studies, noon-1:15pm Lubar Commons (7200 Law)

  • December 5, 2011: Lecture on "Transitional Justice or Just Transitions: The German Case, 1945-1950" by Professor Devin Pendas, Department of History, Boston College, sponsored by the Center for German and European Studies and GLS, part of the speaker series on "Laws Response to Consequences of Violent Conflict," noon-1:15pm Lubar Commons (7200 Law), a light lunch will be served on a first come, first served basis

Spring 2012

  • March 21, 2012: Lecture on "Silencing Sudan's Reign of Terror," by Professor John Hagan (Northwestern University), Spring 2012 Sociology Colloquia, Sewell Social Science Building, Room 8417, 12:15pm, hosted by Professor Joe Conti,  sponsored by Sociology and GLS.

  • April 11, 2012:  Ambassador David Scheffer (Northwestern University School of Law) will speak on his book titled All the Missing Souls: A Personal History of the War Crimes Tribunals (Princeton University Press), in the speaker series "Laws Response to Consequences of Violent Conflict," Noon - 1:15, Lubar Commons, a light lunch will be served on a first come first served basis.
