The Wisconsin Supreme Court and Wisconsin State Legislature recently
implemented new requirements for electronically recording custodial
interrogations. The Wisconsin Criminal Justice Study Commission
supports electronic recording, because it will help the criminal
justice system convict the guilty, and only the guilty.
However, because the funding provided by the legislature is
insufficient to cover law enforcement's costs in implementing
recording, law enforcement agencies will need to request additional
funding from local government. The Wisconsin Criminal Justice
Study Commission has drafted a letter supporting such requests for local funding.
To request that a copy of the letter be sent by the Commission to
a local funding entity, please contact the Commission's staff attorney,
Byron Lichstein, at bclichstein@wisc.edu or 608-265-2741.
