Course Description

An introduction to the American common law tradition and the American legal system, especially for foreign law students and foreign and American graduate students.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, students should
1. understand the overall structure of U.S. law and the U.S. legal system so that they can place other more detailed courses and later experiences with U.S. law in context;
2. gain experience analyzing original U.S. legal decisions, which should make subsequent research or exposure easier; and
3. understand the basic principles underlying several areas of U.S. law and legal procedure.
