Continuing Legal Education for Wisconsin (CLEW) refers to the continuing education activities of the University of Wisconsin Law School and University of Wisconsin ‑ Extension.


2009 CLEW Tax Workshop: Faculty

Ronald Berman is a shareholder with the Madison law firm of Neider & Boucher, S.C., where he practices in tax, estate planning and corporate law. Mr. Berman received his law degree with honors from the University of Illinois where he was elected to Order of the Coif.

Jeffrey S. Billings is an associate with the law firm of Godfrey & Kahn, S.C., and a member of the estate planning practice group in the Milwaukee office. Mr. Billings graduated with a degree in philosophy, summa cum laude, from Lawrence University and received his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School.

R. Christian Davis is a vice president specializing in probate with the Private Client Group of U.S. Bank, NA in Madison. He received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in 1972 and his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1975. He has been with US Bank since 1977.

J. Gardner Govan is a shareholder in the law firm of Godfrey & Kahn, S.C. Mr. Govan attended Harvard University prior to receiving his undergraduate degree with academic honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated, magna cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School where he was elected to Order of the Coif.

Patricia A. Hintz is a partner with the law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP, and practices with the tax group. Ms. Hintz received her law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School, was elected to Order of the Coif, and served as an editor of the Wisconsin Law Review. She also earned a master's degree in taxation from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a bachelor's degree in accounting, magna cum laude, from Marquette University. She is a certified public accountant.


James A. Jaeger is a partner with the Madison law firm of Hill, Glowacki, Jaeger & Hughes LLP. Mr. Jaeger is a 1975 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and holds a LL.M. in taxation from Temple University Law School. Mr. Jaeger has been certified as a Certified Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation, the only body authorized by the ABA to make such certifications.

David H. Patzer is a shareholder in the law firm of Godfrey & Kahn, S.C., and a member of the estate planning practice group in the Milwaukee office. Mr. Patzer's practice is concentrated in the areas of probate administration, estate planning, and taxation. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin‑Madison with a major in accounting and graduated, cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School.

Timothy G. Schally is a partner with the law firm of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, and is coordinator of the taxation group. Mr. Schally received his bachelor's degree from Marquette University and his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School and served as an editor of the Wisconsin Law Review.

Carol A. Scott is a supervisor, customer service in the business tax area with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Ms. Scott has worked for the Department of Revenue since 1989 and received her B.S. in Managerial Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Sherry L. Watson is vice president and manager of tax at Marshall & Ilsley Trust Co., NA. Ms. Watson has 23 years of experience in fiduciary taxation. She is a certified public accountant and a member of the WICPA and AICPA. She holds a BB.S. in accounting from Marquette University.

Julie J. Woelfel, CPA, has been a revenue field auditor with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue since 1989. She is responsible for auditing individuals and companies for income and sales and use tax purposes. She also provides taxpayer assistance. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin‑Parkside in 1989 with a B.S. in Business Management.

Continuing Education Credit: Up to 12 hours of Wisconsin CLE credit may be earned through attendance at this program. Members of bars in other mandatory CLE states are requested to contact the CLEW office for information on obtaining credit in their states.

Program Fee: $260/registrant ($240/paralegal or legal secretary). Early bird discount: Register by September 14 and save $20! The fee includes course materials, full luncheon on Thursday (please indicate on the enrollment form if you desire a vegetarian meal), and three refreshment breaks. Please make checks payable to the UW Law School.

Cancellation Policy: Refunds will be paid in full if requested 3 days before each program.

Materials: If you cannot attend the CLEW Tax Workshop, you can order the materials for $75 plus applicable sales tax. Please see the enrollment form for the amount due, including sales tax. Check the appropriate box on the enrollment form and include a check made payable to the UW Law School. Materials will be sent out after the final Workshop on November 5 ‑ 6, 2009.

Overnight Accommodations: A block of rooms has been set aside at each site for the night before the program. For the Green Bay Workshop, we have reserved a block of rooms at the Best Western Midway Hotel, 780 Armed Forces (Packer) Drive, Green Bay, WI 54304 (phone: (920) 499‑3161); just two blocks from the Brett Favre Steakhouse. Reserved rooms are limited, so be sure to make your room reservation at least three weeks ahead. All rooms not reserved at least three weeks ahead of the program date will be released. In order to receive the discounted rate, please refer to the "UW Law School Room Block" when making your reservation.

Free Parking: Parking is free at all locations.
