Clerkship Salaries

How Much Money Will I Make as a Judicial Clerk?

State Salaries

Vermont Law School's Guide to State Judicial Clerkship Procedures, has some limited information about clerkship salaries for most state courts. To access the Guide, go to Click on "Resources" at the top of the page, then click on "Judicial Clerkship and Internship Resources."  Then click on "Guide to State Judicial Clerkships."  Enter the username "long" and the password "trail." Because each state has different salary structures, the best resource for determining state court clerkship salaries is from each state's respective Clerk of Court's office.

Federal Salaries

Salaries for judicial clerks serving in federal courts are standardized into "grades" and "steps" and then adjusted for location.  The applicable grade and step depend mainly on experience and bar membership and secondarily on the discretion of the judge. For more information on the grade and step applicable to you, click on "Technical Rules" below.
