TVC's Genie Tyburski has compiled an excellent guide on How to Conduct a Background Check. It covers the types of background checks, legal restrictions, and gives links to companies offering this type of service.

Background checks can be a very useful tool to help you see more information (much of which we wouldn't "normally" see) about anyone including yourself. There are also other tools online now such as phone number trace services which provide background information too.
